Audience of "Throw like a girl"

Feminism and women's rights have been growing lately in today's society, but many people don't see the reason.  This commercial was a groundbreaking piece that exposed many of these people that don't understand why feminism exists to a side of the comment "like a girl" they have never seen before.  The "like a girl" comment has always been seen as you are doing nothing wrong, that oh girls aren't as good at something as boys its fine, but it is very detrimental to the female youth population.  This comment has manly been used in sports but has also be used in everyday life. Coaches of almost every type of sport or parents telling their kid they can do better use it all the time.  Which is why when this commercial aired during the 2015 super bowl  was such an amazing thing to witness.  This sport (football) is a male dominated sport and so are its viewers, so when this feminist ad airs it opens the eyes of all the people watching that this comment actually hurts people and need to be stopped.  The director does a great job of showing the different age groups doing things "Like a girl" and how they change the younger girls get.  It conveys to the audience the damage that this term has done girls over their lifetime.

  1. Often times the phrase "you ___ like a girl" is used as an insult to the younger kids, as if behaving like a female makes them less capable than the others. Therefore, I think this commercial is not only designed to empower young women, but also to let the younger generation know that there is nothing wrong to do something like a girl, since girls are just as capable as boys.

  2. "Throw like a girl" is a common phrase used to make young boys try harder. When children grow up hearing these sorts of things all of the time, they grow to believe them. The people watching this are meant to learn that girls believe in their abilities, which empowers girls and provokes thought from boys. I think that the audience analysis here focuses more on the message being sent and less on the impact of the message.

  3. "Throw like a girl" is used as a common phrase used toward boys to make them try harder, but this phrase is also directed toward women a lot too. "You __ like a girl" is told towards young girls in sports as if the purpose is to make them play to a guys level because playing like a girl was considered as a bad thing. As you see in the video the older girls who are heard this refered to it as a negative thing but the young girls you have not refered to it as a positive thing.

  4. I thought your analysis of the commercial "Throw like a girl," was good, but I did not really understand how you connected it to the audience. I did like your link to the viewers of sporting events, but I think you could have gone more in depth about who the audience was and why they were the intended audience.

  5. I think that the phrase "___ like a girl" is such a condescending an arrogant thing to say. In addition to your comments, I think that the phrase also implies that girls are unable to be good or try at anything. Although men may have some advantages biologically, it is by no means a generalization that can be applied to the entire population. There are women that are stronger, faster, and smarter than most men but for some reason "like a girl" is still a condescending phrase. I believe that boundaries are made to be broken; any person, female or male, can do anything that they put their mind to. Any phrase that undermines a person's efforts is narrow-minded and shouldn't be a part in our society.

  6. I definitely agree that the phrase "like a girl" has been socialized in our society to mean something condescending. I think that it also goes back to how most people are socialized by media outlets that say girl's are weak. However, I feel like you never explained who the target audience was for this text. I feel like it could have been targeted towards parents or adults to make sure children aren't being socialized with negative connotations of females.

  7. I agree with what you wrote about the comment being swept under the rug for years, as it was so common. What you showed about how prejudice towards women is still relatively prevalent in today's society was also an important point to have discussed.
